Prof. Athanasios Mantalaris
Prof. Athanasios (Sakis) Mantalaris is professor of Biosystems Engineering at Imperial College London. His research focuses on the development of novel manufacturing solutions and analytical tools for high-value stem cell and tissue engineering products with special interests in continuous manufacturing, new process analytical tools, process intensification to improve yields while lowering costs and improved process prediction through ‘quality by design’. He leads SyMBioSys, a Horizon 2020 funded initiative to provide training to a new generation of innovative, entrepreneurial early-stage researchers that will develop cutting-edge kinetic models for biological processes and exploit these for designing novel biotechnological applications. Recently, he was awarded a grant worth €2.5 million for his cell-based therapy project, BioBlood. He has published over 150 original manuscripts, co-edited ‘Advances in Tissue Engineering’ (2008) and has received numerous awards including the prestigious IChemE Donald Medal and a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Award. He holds several patents with several more pending, including those related to bioreactor design and biomaterial synthesis innovation.
